An Historic Hacienda by Wallace Neff in Palm Springs

Let’s head two hours east of L.A. for a spell. You guessed it, Palm Springs. No doubt you’ve heard that this desert oasis has been transforming into one of the hottest real estate markets in Southern California. And the truth is, this new boom is really just beginning. One of the coolest things about this hot town is that it has an incredibly high concentration of outstanding architecture. And even though the town is widely known as a Mecca for midcentury modern enthusiasts thanks to the commercial strips lined with Googie inspired structures and the dazzling homes of Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and others, the town’s architectural roots lie in the Spanish Colonial style and there is no shortage of these gems that will drop your jaw to the Saltillo tiles beneath your feet. Liberace, Ann Miller, Sonny and Cher are among those that appreciated the warmth of and timelessness of these homes, so perfectly suited to desert living. And I am thrilled to bring to market a truly unique property with historic significance – The Bourne Residence, designed by Wallace Neff.

Built in 1933, this sprawling hacienda was commissioned by uber-wealthy playboy and Singer Sewing fortune heir, Arthur Bourne. At the time its construction, Mr. Bourne owned a vast amount of land. Over time, most of the land was sold, eventually evolving into the community known today as Tennis Club. Today, the home sits on a more-than-comfortable 1.26 acre parcel, and is being sold along with an adjoining 5,227 square foot parcel for a total of 1.38 acres.

The foyer alone is larger than many studio apartments in L.A. and with a ceiling that rises 16’ overhead there is a definite sense that something grand awaits beyond the doorways ahead.

Stepping into the living room, the promise of grandeur is delivered – in spades. “Cavernous” is perhaps the best word to describe this room. Functionally, it connects two long wings of the house, all of which open to a courtyard with a pool, spa, and covered patios. But in addition to its size, what makes this room so special are the gigantic sliding doors that open up the entire room to the courtyard, and the huge pyramid-like fireplace on the opposing wall.

This room alone makes this property a gem, yet there is so much more to come.

As is, it’s functional and charming, but it has the potential to be transformed into a dream workspace. And extremely spacious room, tons of natural light, a huge breakfast room, a large pantry, and two doors leading to the front and side yards offer so many possibilities.

The sizable breakfast room is larger than many dining rooms. Behind it is a bedroom, bathroom and laundry room, likely used as a servant’s quarters at one time.

And it’s one of my favorite rooms in the house.

And if that’s more than you need (after all, who really needs 10 bedrooms), think outside of the box and consider the many other possibilities: For instance a private school! A Church? Executive offices, perhaps. Artist studios – including on-site galleries! A private club? I can’t say for sure what’s permitted, but it’s certainly worth looking into.

While Neff was alive, he was one of the most sought after architects of Hollywood’s biggest stars. And to this day the magic of his work is still appreciated by Tinseltown’s biggest names. Among those who’ve owned his homes are Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Groucho Marx, Jack Lemon, Greta Garbo, Joan Bennett, Claudette Colbert, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Madonna, Barbra Streisand and Diane Keaton. Here’s your chance to add your name to a long list of proud owners of Neff designed homes.
