When evaluating a property, one really ought to consider the entire package: the neighborhood, the site, the views, the grounds, and of course, the house. And in this case, the house alone is more than worthy of a blog post, simply because of its architectural pedigree. But when you visit it in person, your appreciation of it will be amplified several fold because of these other factors, especially the splendid grounds that envelop it.

Ellwood was not formally trained as an architect and yet he went on to join the ranks of the elite corps of mid-century modern architects, contributing three homes to the now famous Case Study program.

The house offers 3 BR, 2 BA and 1,701 square feet of living space, but it feels like much more thanks to its open floor plan and walls of glass.

Even if this home is beyond your budget, I recommend stopping in at an open house. In 2009 the home was a featured stop on the tour sponsored by MAK Center for Art and Architecture. Or even if you’re not a huge architecture buff, but are a fan of Maroon 5, this is the home of Mickey Madden, the former bassist in the band. I say go see it for the house, but to each his own.
