The Stevens Residence by John Lautner – 78 Malibu Colony Rd

Fans of modern architecture will be overjoyed by this new listing in Malibu. I certainly am. If you’ve checked in with this blog regularly, you’ll know that one of my favorite architects is John Lautner and the Stevens Residence is one of the homes that I’ve longed to see in person for some time.

This Stevens House is significant in the legacy of Lautner’s work, as well as in the evolution of homes built in the Colony. Built in 1968, it was the first of several projects by Lautner in Malibu and was somewhat of a turning point in the style of

This Stevens House is significant in the legacy of Lautner’s work, as well as in the evolution of homes built in the Colony. Built in 1968, it was the first of several projects by Lautner in Malibu and was somewhat of a turning point in the style of homes being developed along this prized strip of beachfront. One can imagine the envy that a home like this might stir among neighbors known for the depth of their pride, as well as their pockets.

Ever the architectural rebel whose ideas stand alone in their originality, Lautner took a modest 37’ wide parcel and built a home of unmistakable artistry, which today is a CA State Cultural Landmark. The 3,366 square foot home made from concrete, glass and wood features 5 bedrooms, 5 baths, and a pool – which, Mr. Stevens was told was impossible by other architects he interviewed for the job. Impressive details abound throughout the home. Such as the louvered shades between the concrete columns, to the Japanese ceramic tiles on the floor, which mirror the design of the wood used on the the ceiling.

Another first for Lautner on thie project was the use of a reinforced concrete catenary curved shell, whose lines suggest a cresting and crashing wave. But there is more to the design than just a pretty face. This design was selected because of its

Another first for Lautner on thie project was the use of a reinforced concrete catenary curved shell, whose lines suggest a cresting and crashing wave. But there is more to the design than just a pretty face. This design was selected because of its suitability for the harsh beach environment by resisting cracking, and also because Lautner felt it could withstand a tidal wave by allowing water to flow through the house.

Fans of the TV show Two and a Half Men will immediately recognize this home from the aerial shot of the Malibu coast that’s used to show the general area where Charlie Sheen’s jingle-writing character Charlie Harper supposedly lives. I love the freely composed mullions on this wall of glass that looks out to the ocean. Just beyond a large cedar deck is the sandy beach and ocean, buttressed by a wooden bulkhead designed by boat builder Duncan Stewart.

Another feature seen in other Lautner homes is the horseshoe shaped staircase. This one, made from cedar panels, separates the living room and dining room from each other.
