The Schnabel House, by (st)architect Frank Gehry, is a property that you must walk through in order to properly appreciate it. And if you’re the type that likes to own things that are truly unique, this is the home for you. In some regards, Gehry’s work might be perceived as spartan or severe. But there’s no question that it is simultaneously graceful and elegant. A recurring design element in his work is ceilings with the surface left uncovered, revealing the rafters and plywood of the roof, such as that which we see here. To me, this is a marvelous choice. I like it because it creates an interesting surface to look at. But also because it takes you directly into the process that created the space. And I love how it complements the tone of the floors and the geometry of the huge picture window above the door.

The kitchen is a long, sprawling workspace whose finishes are in keeping with the rest of the house. As with most every room in the house, it’s flooded with natural light and opens up to the yard.

Regarding this particular house, Frank Gehry has said that “this is the design that I fantasized about for my own residence”. For the owner of this place, that is a pretty cool thing to be able to brag about.
