When hearing the name Frank Gehry, many Angelenos may conjure images of sweeping, irregular angles and curves with shiny metallic surfaces thanks in no small part to the Disney Concert Hall, one of his more well-known contributions to L.A. Of course, there is a long list of famous structures by Gehry that have embraced this unique style, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and Experience Music Project in Seattle.

 The Benson House, 1981, may not have a have a footprint or profile that is wildly provocative. Yet, it does employ some of the elements that became hallmarks of his “deconstructivism” style of architecture. For instance, it makes use of a variety of

The Benson House, 1981, may not have a have a footprint or profile that is wildly provocative. Yet, it does employ some of the elements that became hallmarks of his “deconstructivism” style of architecture. For instance, it makes use of a variety of materials that are applied in uncommon ways such as zig-zag asphalt roofing used as exterior sheathing. On the inside unfinished and finished plywood are used, and rafters are left exposed giving a sense that the house is unfinished. Also, the living spaces are divided between two structures. Two bedrooms, a loft work space, and two bathrooms are included in a 3-story structure, while the main living spaces with a third bedroom and laundry are in another single-story structure and the two are connected by wood bridges on the second story.
