What a treat… another Lautner designed house hits the market in less than a month. (see post on Bergren Residence on Sept 22). And this one is even more dazzling. The Foster Carling House, which is perched on a hilltop above Mulholland with 360-degree views of the city and valley, is significant in the history of Lautner’s architecture. One of his early works, it features innovative design elements that retain their “wow” factor to this day.

Built in the early years of his career, the Carling House became an instant classic. Also, it was the first of many projects with builder John de la Vaux, who, prior to this project, was a yacht builder. The home includes old-growth redwood planking

Also, it was the first of many projects with builder John de la Vaux, who, prior to this project, was a yacht builder. The home includes old-growth redwood planking, raised fireplace, polished concrete floors, built-in furniture and detailed woodwork throughout.

Lautner’s designs are typically striking from the moment you see them. But the real beauty lies in the details. His fascination with complex machinery always leads to a living space that is undeniably unique. In the case of the Carling House, the hexagonal main living area is rendered completely free of internal columns by suspending it from three steel cantilever masts at its corners.

The idea of indoor/outdoor living was taken to an entirely new level in the design of this home. The swimming pool flows from the exterior into the living room, separated by a retracting wall of glass. This was an idea that he revisited with the famous Elrod House in Palm Springs. And if that isn’t cool enough, an entire living room section with built-in sofa swings out into the yard/terrace to face the downtown skyline. I think the street address for this place should be 007.

Yeah, that's a pretty sexy bedroom.

The open plan layout is ideal for quiet living or large scale entertaining with a generous dining area, bar and living room with multiple seating arrangements.
