It’s always great when you have a “go to” store. You know, the sort of place that you’re confident you’ll be able to find something that’s just right, whether you’re shopping for clothing, jewelry, art or home furnishings for yourself or whether you’re in search of a special gift for someone for whom you have no idea where to start. Co-Op 28 on Vermont Avenue in Los Feliz is just that type of store. Outside, a huge sign on the storefront offers a hint of what you’ll find inside. I’m not simply referring to the words “Handmade. Vintage. Home.” Rather, if you look closely, you’ll notice that the sign itself is a handmade work of art composed of fragments of an assortment of found objects.

The front door, which is always open, leads to an expansive floor with a bohemian vibe that intrigues and beckons passersby to come in. Try it out. Stand at the front door and watch how many people walking by stop in on an impulse. It’s a lot. Once

Stand at the front door and watch how many people walking by stop in on an impulse. It’s a lot. Once inside, you’ll find the store’s inventory covers a lot of ground, literally and figuratively. The room that you initially walk into (above) comprised the entire store when owner Marci Siegel first opened two and a half years ago. A short time later it was expanded to include the room at the back, which today features a large neon “Roadhouse” sign, again beckoning you on.

The most recent expansion was into the adjoining storefront (above). This additional space was perfect for the wonderful collection of mid-century inspired furniture from Apt2B that the store now offers. As you explore this room, don’t be surprised

As you explore this room, don’t be surprised if the one of the friendly staffers stationed behind the hip corrugated steel counter offers you a glass of wine.

At the center of the store is rectangular sales counter, beautifully constructed from stacks of books, complete with built-in shelves. (If you’re the type that has refused to throw all of your books since high school, here’s a great way to put them

With regard to the categories of inventory, the scope of this boutique is broad to say the least. Co-Op 28 represents the work of over 115 artists, artisans and designers from around the country and beyond. The amazing assortment includes vintage go

One of my other favorite things about the store is “Popcorn”. Not the edible sort. Popcorn is a sweet, slow moving, rescued Dalmatian who follows Marci everywhere around the store. Popcorn was preceded by another sweet Dalmatian rescue named Pretzel, who could always be found napping beneath one of the tables of clothing.
