Architectural Dazzler in Mid-Wilshire

A great way to get a sense of architects’ ideas and creativity is to see the homes they build for themselves.  A shining example of that (literally and figuratively) is this stunning new listing in Mid-Wilshire designed by architects Linda Pollari and Robert Somol. From the street, one can’t help but be struck by the sleek 100-foot long home whose galvanized metal exterior is punctuated solely by a pair of long ribbon windows. The austerity of the structure is complemented beautifully by landscaping that features an abundance of gentle grasses. This complementary contrast of textures is just a hint of that which is to be found within.

Douglas fir and a mosaic-like wall of stacked stone flank either side a sliding glass door that leads to a patio. Not only is this variety beautiful, but it works especially well as a way to frame the lush oasis that’s found in the yard.

A great little touch that contributes to this blurring is the curved line of the terrazzo on the patio, which extends into the living room. Awesome.

Here is the feature that I love the most. From overhead this may look like just another kidney shaped pool, but it’s much more than that. The pool has a sloped wall that extends, in a swooping fashion, about a foot about above waterline on one side.

A white, penny-round tiled deck surrounds the pool and its high side extends in a cantilevered fashion above the low side. (see far end in the photo above)

The second bedroom makes for a great office. I dig the stucco wall, which adds yet another texture to the design.

None of the rooms have interior doors. The beveled effect of the hallway wall is very effective in the way that it leads one into this room.

The carport with it’s V-shaped supports has a classic mid-century feel to it. And the concrete driveway with a random patch of grass is just perfect.
